How Does UVA + UVC Dual wavelength Works?
The principle of ultraviolet sterilization comes from 2 forms.
One is the direct effect. As we all know, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is a disinfection method that uses
short-wavelength ultraviolet (ultraviolet C or UVC), light to kill or inactivate microorganisms by destroying nucleic
acids and disrupting their DNA, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions.
The ultraviolet absorption and photochemical sensitivity of DNA in the microbial cell nucleus coincide with 240-280nm
and the absorption peak is around 265nm.
It is generally believed that the ultraviolet absorption peak of DNA is around 265nm, so ultraviolet rays around 265nm
have the highest sterilization efficiency.
UVA Antibacterial investigates
405nm UVA
This study investigates possible advantages in pulsed over continuous 405-nm light-emitting diode (LED) light for
bacterial inactivation and energy efficiency.
Background: Alternative nonantibiotic methods of disinfection and infection control have become of
significant interest. Recent studies have demonstrated the
application of systems using 405-nm LEDs for continuous disinfection of the clinical environment,
and also for potential treatment of contaminated wounds.
Methods: Liquid suspensions of 103 colony-forming units/mL populations of Staphylococcus aureus
were subject to pulsed 405-nm light of different frequencies,
duty cycles, and intensities and for different lengths of time.
Results: Pulsed exposures with the same average irradiance of 16 mW/cm2 and varying duty
cycle (25%, 50%, 75%) showed very similar performance compared
with continuous exposures, with 95–98% reduction of S. aureus achieved for all duty cycles.
The pulsing frequency was varied in intervals from 100 Hz to 10 kHz and appeared to have
little effect on antimicrobial efficacy. However, when comparing pulsed with continuous
exposure, an improvement in inactivation per unit optical energy was achieved, with results
showing an increase of approximately 83% in optical efficiency.
Conclusions: These results suggest that under pulsed conditions, a lower energy consumption
and lower perceived brightness could be achieved, thus potentially providing improved operating
conditions for medical/infection control applications without compromising antimicrobial efficacy.
The characteristic wavelength of the mercury lamp for sterilization is 253.7nm, and its radiant power reaches the level of watts (W).

Compared with ultraviolet LED lamps, mercury lamps have large size, high energy consumption, long warm-up time, mercury-containing weaknesses
and other weaknesses. Under the influence of the international Minamata Convention, they will withdraw from the historical stage in a shorter period of time.

Researchers at Columbia University have discovered that ultraviolet light
with a wavelength of 222 nm cannot penetrate the stratum corneum of human skin, is harmless to the human body,
and has the same bactericidal effect as traditional ultraviolet lamps.
This work is still in the laboratory research stage, and there is still a long way to go before industrial application.
The 405nm purple light (which can also be classified into the UVA range) has a certain sterilization ability.
The researchers used an 18150mW 405nm light source to irradiate E. coli at a distance of 50cm for 9 hours, obtaining a 99.9% sterilization efficiency .
The principle is that light-sensitive molecules such as riboflavin and porphyrin in bacterial cells can absorb specific light energy in UVA to form active molecules such as OH-, O2-, O2, etc., which damages the cell wall of bacteria and is killed. This method has low sterilization efficiency, high required light source power and difficult heat dissipation, which greatly limits its wide application.
