As with all solar lights the Solar Step Light needs sunlight to charge so it should be mounted facing South,West or East, if mounted facing North lighting time will be reduced.
Notes:

Please install the unit face south and make sure the solar panel can get the sunlight directly without any shelter or glass.
Prior to first use, please allow the batteries to charge for 2 or 3 sunny days before turning the lights on for the first time.
