Steel production and sales:
ArcelorMittal crude steel output in the first quarter was 21.1 million tons, an increase of 6.6% from the previous month and a decrease of 12% from the same period last year. The shipment volume of steel products was 19.5 million tons, a decrease of 1% month-on-month and 10.6% year-on-year.
Iron ore production and sales:
ArcelorMittal's own iron ore output was 14.4 million tons in the first quarter, a decrease of 2.7% from the previous month and an increase of 2.1% from the same period last year. Shipment volume of traded iron ore was 8.6 million tons, a decrease of 10.4% month-on-month and 6.5% year-on-year. The sales volume of iron ore decreased in the first quarter, mainly due to seasonal factors, unplanned maintenance, COVID-19 epidemic and AMMC restrictions.
Financial aspects:
ArcelorMittal's turnover in the first quarter was US $ 14.844 billion, a decrease of 4.3% from the fourth quarter of 2019 and a decrease of 22.6% from the same period last year. Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic in March, ArcelorMittal had an operating loss of $ 353 million, a loss of $ 1.5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2019, and a surplus of $ 769 million in the first quarter of 2019. Profit before tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) was US $ 967 million, an increase of 4.5% from the previous month and a decrease of 41.5% from the same period last year.
