EU Urges Apple to Abandon Lightning: To Reduce E-Waste and Facilitate Consumers

At a time when U.S. authorities are increasingly scrutinizing iPhone encryption, European authorities are adding to the pressure on apple to ban its lightning interface cable.

Members of the European Parliament called on the European Commission to force all mobile devices to use a unified universal charger.

This is to reduce e-waste and facilitate consumers. The European Union estimates that old mobile phone chargers generate about 51000 tons of e-waste a year.

The proposal will be voted on at an unspecified time. According to the BBC, apple said the law would stifle innovation and have a devastating impact on consumers.

At present, there are three kinds of charging cables used by mobile phone manufacturers: microusb, usb-c and Apple's lightning.

According to BBC news, apple replaced lightning with a usb-c interface on the iPad Pro released at the end of 2018. If forced to give up lightning cable on other products, the manufacturer may use usb-c interface or push wireless charging.
