A pool heat pump uses electricity to operate and makes use of the outside ambient air which contributes to its efficiency. A pool heat pump does not generate heat.
As the pool pump circulates the swimming pool water, the pool water passes through a filter and the heat pump water heater. The heat pump heater has a fan that draws in the outside air and circulates the air through the evaporator coil.
Liquid refrigerant inside the evaporator coil absorbs the heat from the outside air and becomes a gas. The warm gas in the coil then passes through the compressor. The compressor increases the heat, creating a very hot gas that then passes through the condenser. The condenser transfers the heat from the hot gas to the cooler pool water circulating through the heater. The heated water then returns to the pool. The hot gas, as it flows through the condenser coil, returns to liquid form and back to the evaporator, where the whole process begins again.
Most pool heat pumps use the same dependable technology to move heat from one place to another using electric power and a sealed refrigerant compression system.
Just like a room air conditioner moves 2 to 3 units of heat from your home for every unit of electricity it consumes, many heat pumps us 1 unit of electric energy to move 4 to 6 units of heat from the air, which delivers 5 to 7 units of heat to your pool water. This makes pool heat pumps very cost effective to operate!
In basic terms – a pool heat pump uses the warmth of the air and puts it into your pool! Easy, right?!
