Scientists from Lehigh University, West Chester University, Osaka University in Japan and the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands have reportedly developed a new technology to adjust the color of LEDs.

olkmar Dierolf, a well-known expert and chairman of the College of Physics at the University of Lehay, participated in the research and development of the project. It is said that the new technology can pave the way for monolithic integration to achieve simple color matching of light bulbs. With this technology, commercial LEDs will be able to adjust between bright white and more comfortable warm tones.

The team described the possibility of color adjustment for GaN-based LEDs by simply changing the timing of the current supplied to the device. It is noteworthy that this technology is compatible with LED as the core of commercial solid-state LED lighting.

In the current active LED display, 3-4 tightly emitted independent LEDs produce different colors and create different basic colors needed to produce full-color spectra.

Dierolf said that a single LED could achieve color matching, and they found that red, green and blue light could be obtained from a single GaN LED structure doped with a single type of rare earth ion europium (Eu). In other words, by manipulating the emission characteristics of atomic dopants, the team achieved color tunability in a single GaN-based LED.

Mitchell pointed out that this study (using multiple excited states of the same dopant as the main objective) is not limited to the GaN: Europium system, and its application is more widespread. The results open up a new field for single dopant tunable emission in semiconductors, which can be achieved by simple injection current tuning.

Dierolf believes that those who want to get more comfortable warm white light from LEDs will benefit from the technology. Moreover, because this technology can apply higher pixel density, it will also help to develop micro LED display.

The research was published in the ACS Photonics journal entitled Colour-Tunablity in GaN LEDs Based on Atomic Emission Manipulation under Current Injection. (Compiler: LED in Janice)
