Differences between Air Source Heat Pump and Air Conditioner

5. Operating mode difference

a.Although the air source heat pump is electrified all day, when the heating is completed, the unit will stop working and automatically heat preservation. Household appliances generally do not work more than 2 hours a day, so air source heat pump save electricity than air conditioners, better protect compressor, and prolong their service life.

heat pump for hot water

Air conditioner is frequently used in summer, especially in the northern region, but air source heat pump integrates hot water, heating and cooling, also runs for a long time in winter.

Especially in winter, there is a large demands for hot water, so the air source heat pump needs a longer time to run to raise the water temperature, and the compressor needs more time to run, so the compressor basically runs in the high refrigerant area. Operating temperature is one of the main factors affecting compressor life. Under the same operating time, the comprehensive load of compressor in air source heat pump is higher than that of compressor in air conditioner.

6.Difference of system defrosting

Generally, the higher temp refrigerant is, the outdoor temp difference bigger, then it will be easier getting defrosting. Air source heat pump is with small temp difference, but air conditioner is big temp difference.

Air source heat pump focus on heating. In winter, air source heat pump absorb heat under low ambient temp, when the weather drop to -20 deg c, the refrigerant temp is about -30 deg c. There is about 10 deg c temp difference.

Air conditioner focus on cooling. In summer, when the weather raise to 45 deg c, then the exhause temp of compressor will reach to 80-90 deg c, or even reach to 100 deg c. Then temp difference is 40-50 deg c.

So, in same conditions, heat transfer area of air source heat pump will far more bigger than air conditioner. That’s why the volume of the air source heat pump bigger than air conditioner’s.

The defrosting performance of air source heat pump is much better than that of air conditioner in terms of control logic, evaporator area, and the difference between refrigerant and outdoor temp, and the possibility of frosting is samller. Therefore, the total effective heat supply is greater than that of air conditioner.
