You’re a beginner saxophone and your sound is…….a bit rubbish!
Don’t worry, most of us have been there.
And after teaching over 10,000 students through Sax School in the past few years, I have seen this over and over again.
The good news though is that there are 5 common mistakes that players make that causes a rubbish sound on saxophone. And here I show you not only WHAT they are but HOW to avoid them.
How to start improving your sax sound
Most people will go straight for long tone exercises. And there is nothing wrong with that, however they can be pretty dull. Check out my 5 Long Tone Exercises (that don’t suck) lesson for something more fun that you will actually want to do each day!
However to really improve your sound you need to start before your long tones by looking at your gear and technique.
The process for improving your sound must start by checking out your Reeds, how you place your mouthpiece in your mouth (yes that’s a common thing people get wrong!) and understand how to Breathe properly.
This all sounds like basic stuff, but unless you get these things right, you will always struggle to develop a great tone on your custom saxophone.
Getting your gear right
Now in this lesson I don’t go into huge detail on which saxophone or mouthpiece will make you sound better. Frankly the gear is the least important part of this equation.
However, understanding the different types of mouthpieces and making a clever choice here IS very important. And it can make the difference between enjoying your sound (and wanting to play more) and basically getting very frustrated, very quickly.
The final piece of the puzzle is your Embouchure and how you develop it.
Enjoy working through the tips and techniques. Don’t forget to grab my Saxophone to put all of this into action and develop your saxophone skills!
