Verizon plans to launch 5g wireless in the US later this year, keeping pace with Apple's fall launch of its new iPhone.
Ronan Dunne, Verizon's head of consumer business, is still unable to confirm when the company's 5g service will be launched. Dunne said at an investor briefing on Thursday that the company would "choose the right business opportunity to launch 5g services this year.".
According to Nicki Palmer, chief product development officer of Verizon, the next generation of 5g wireless services will use a new technology that has not been verified, namely dynamic spectrum sharing technology, which can be connected to compatible mobile phones through combination of low-frequency bands.
Compared with the current 4G network, the speed of 5g in the low-frequency band will not be greatly improved, but the introduction of 5g network will bring Verizon a key marketing information, which is conducive to its competition with at & T and T-Mobile. It is expected that the arrival of Apple's 5g iPhone will lead to a huge super cycle of mobile phone sales.
T-Mobile launched its low-frequency 5g service last year, and at & T said it would launch its own low-frequency 5g service in mid-2020. Verizon currently has 5g services in high frequency band and millimeter wave in a small area in about 30 cities, and it is expected that Verizon will have the 5g service in more than 60 cities by the end of this year, executives of Verizon said at the investor conference.
After giving up trying to sell 5g services for $10, Verizon plans to work with video streaming media such as Apple Music and Walt Disney's Disney +, offering a range of 5g services at a range of prices.
